Erasmus+ project “BETTER TOGETHER”, Elementary school Župa dubrovačka, Mlini

As educators, we are all aware of the fact that including the collaborative learning, tolerance, and equality for all, as well as the intercultural dimension in our curriculum and everyday practice is a must to improve the 21st century skills of our pupils and staff.

The main goal of this project presentation is to raise awareness among our colleagues that the knowledge and skills needed for life in the 21st century are acquired from an early age and that most of those skills cannot be learned from a textbook.

The student-centred project activities presented in this talk will help the participants in preparing and delivering their lessons as well as in planning and designing their own everyday school activities gathered around the two main topics:

  • Cultural and intercultural awareness
  • European values of tolerance and equality

The participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions about the Erasmus+ programme in general.

  1. Ivana Bokavšek & Miranda Barac: London is always a great idea!

This workshop is intended to disseminate the results of the professional development course for Croatian teachers of English that was held in London in April 2022 and was organised by HUPE (Croatian Association of Teachers of English) with the support of AZOO (Education and Teacher Training Agency). The participants will be taken on a tour of London, enjoying its landmarks, and learning about its history and culture through various interactive activities. No matter how many times you've already been there, we hope that you will join us because London is always a great idea and an amazing city to explore!

Agenda:

1) Ivana Štiglec: Teaching culture through engaging and interactive learning scenarios

In order to develop our students’ intercultural communication competence and to make sure that one day they will be able to interact with people from other cultures and act as global citizens we need to design meaningful, engaging and interactive lessons that will motivate students and develop a sense of wonder for both other cultures and their own culture. EFL classrooms are an ideal place to do so and this presentation will demonstrate how using various activity types, web tools and different information sources can help create cultural lessons that will exude enthusiasm and engagement among your students.

2) Lidija Šaravanja & Ivana Marinić: How to teach Gen Alpha?

Do we understand how and why things in our classrooms change significantly from time to time? There is a theory called the Strauss–Howe generational theory based on the research of American society. It was conducted by demographers and social scientists and the results can be applied by educators, parents, psychologists and anthropologists as well as many other interested parties. The aim of the presentation is to raise awareness about the characteristics of the generations in our classrooms and to provide some examples on how to address them and help them develop the skills they will need throughout their lives.

Dear colleagues,

The first meeting of HUPE Split Branch will take place on Wednesday, 9th February 2022, at 5:00 p.m. at Osnovna škola Sućidar, Perivoj Ane Roje 1, Split.

Agenda:

  1. HUPE news - 29th Conference report
  1. Ivana Bokavšek: Targeted vocabulary and grammar units in use

To make our students use particular vocabulary and grammar bits in the right context successfully is one of a language teacher's priorities. It takes a persistent practice, and a skilful exchange of exercises to expose students to a regular and correct use of key vocabulary and grammar parts in the context. After this workshop, the participants will be able to apply different techniques and digital tools in order to encourage students to foster a correct and precise use of vocabulary and grammar in the aimed context.

  1. Adriana Petra Blažević, Mara Ruža Blažević & Tania Žuvela Blažević:

The representations of culture, race and gender in English language textbooks

In order to investigate and understand the relations between different social groups participating in copious anglophone settings, in this presentation we will discuss the findings of a quantitative analysis of the representations of culture, race and gender in English language textbooks. In the first section of the presentation we will discuss the theoretical background of the phenomenon in the light of the importance of English in modern education, frequently associated with various systems of social inequality. Thereafter, the listed and interpreted results of the content analysis of nine English language textbooks for first-year highschool students in Croatia will be presented and elaborated. The quantitative analysis was conducted with the aim of determining the prominence of various social groups in English language textbooks, as well as observing how they interact with one another. Finally, the main conclusions derived from the study will be briefly discussed once again in order to restate the focal ideas and open the discussion.

  1. Miranda Barac: Linguistic mediation - activities and assessments

What is linguistic mediation and what does it mean for our classes? How to teach linguistic mediation and assess it? How to create effective, engaging tasks and activities for your students to practise skills, acquire strategies and become more competent mediators? If you need answers to these questions, join this workshop which will give you an introduction to linguistic mediation and what it involves. You will be provided with sample activities, rubrics and checklists for teaching both intra and inter linguistic mediation. This workshop aims to support you and give you all the help that you need to become more confident in teaching this new skill in your classes.

ZAGORJE BRANCH ELECTIONS REPORT

HUPE Zagorje elections were held on 13th September 2021 at an online meeting in Zoom.

At the beginning of the meeting, the former branch president Gordana Bujanić Tretinjak gave a short report on the last two years. HUPE Zagorje held two meetings in the school year 2019/2020 before the Covid 19 pandemic led to lockdown and all the schools in the country were closed. That didn’t stop us, so HUPE Zagorje participated in organisation and carrying out the virtual meetings that the organisation held in 2020 and 2021.

Currently, our branch has 45 members (out of which only 7 members haven’t renewed their membership – one retirement, three maternity leaves) and is growing every day. Out of the total number, 22 people participated in the meeting and took part in the voting.

We had two candidates for the branch president for the first time in four years of our work: Valerija Smerekar from SŠ Krapina and Petra Gorički from SŠ Bedekovčina and SŠ Zabok. The ladies presented themselves and their vision for the future of the branch. Voting was held in Google forms, and Petra Gorički was voted the new branch president by winning 14 votes.

I wish to congratulate our new president and wish her many great LIVE meetings and a lot of fun in running our branch!

Also, thank you all for being part of our little Zagorje branch for these four years and sharing your ideas, enthusiasm and love for teaching English#sharingiscaring

HUPE Zagorje will continue to inspire and hopefully become a bigger branch in the future.

  1. Marijana Petrović: Becoming test-wise

This will be a practical and easy-going workshop on testing. It will start with an overview of test types and types of tasks. Focusing on progress tests used in our classrooms, we will see a number of listening and reading items and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Applying sound testing principles, we will work together on designing reading tests for our classrooms and leave the workshop with tasks we can use with our learners. As promised in the title, we will check our test-wiseness using a very unusual tool!
