The second HUPE Osijek branch meeting in the school year 2024-2025

The second HUPE Osijek branch meeting in the school year 2024-2025 was held on Saturday, 29 March 2025 at the Faculty of Education in Osijek. 23 HUPE members attended the meeting which lasted for four hours.

The agenda included:

  1. Mary Dimitrov: American accents and dialects
  2. Ivana Borozni: Serious Fun! Unlocking the Magic of Humor in Teaching
  3. Mirta Kos Kolobarić: Digitalize your stories

The first workshop, titled American accents and dialects, was held by Mary Dimitrov, a Fulbright scholar and an English Teaching Assistant at the English Language Studies Department at the Faculty of Education in Osijek. Mary presented regional dialect and accent differences in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar across the USA, as well as demonstrated how geography, social class, and history shape these variations. African American Vernacular English (AAVE), Southern, California “Valley girl”/”Frat boy” and New York dialects and accents were discussed in more detail along with social attitudes toward these accents, which can sometimes be linked to stereotypes or biases. The session was very informative as participants learned new expressions and took a New York Times quiz to determine which American region most closely matches their own speech patterns.

The second workshop, titled Serious Fun! Unlocking the Magic of Humor in Teaching, was held by HUPE Slavonski Brod branch president Ivana Borozni from Dragutin Tadijanović Primary School in Slavonski Brod. Ivana presented many different ways teachers can incorporate humour in their EFL classrooms as an effective teaching tool that reduces anxiety, boosts engagement, and improves language retention. Some of the practical and ready-to-use activities that create a more dynamic and enjoyable classroom atmosphere include wordplay, situational jokes, visual humor, puns, memes, anecdotes, and storytelling.

The third workshop, titled Digitalize your storieswas held by Mirta Kos Kolobarić from Secondary School of Economics from Slavonski Brod. Mirta presented some tips and tricks for making and using digital stories in the classroom as a way to engage students in reading and creative writing while incorporating digital tools. Participants learned practical strategies to help students analyse story elements, create their own narratives, and transform them into digital versions, integrating writing, reading, and speaking skills. Examples of student-created digital stories from regular English lessons and an eTwinning project were also  showcased.

The participants were also informed about the latest news in HUPE including the new HUPE Board members elected during the AGM at the HUPE Day on 15 March 2025, the winners of the 5th National Writing Competition – HUPE in Storyland, teacher training courses in New York and Bath planned for July and September, Languages United and HUPE cultural bake-alongs, student and teacher courses provided by our partners from SOL – Sharing One Language, and future professional development events and conferences by our partner associations.

Members were also encouraged to take an active role in HUPE and apply as volunteers for the position of the HUPE Osijek branch president, as the application process is open until 10 May 2025, and the elections will take place at the next branch meeting planned for the second half of May.

At the end of the meeting, the branch president organized a short raffle to give away six conference goody bags filled with useful ELT materials.

HUPE Osijek is grateful to the speakers and all the members who were able to attend the meeting on Saturday morning and create a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere for chatting and sharing ideas. Hopefully, we will see you at our next meeting in May.

The third HUPE Osijek branch meeting in school year 2023-2024

The third and final HUPE Osijek branch meeting in school year 2023-2024 was held on Saturday, 25 May 2024 at the Faculty of Education in Osijek. 13 HUPE members attended the meeting which lasted for three hours.

The agenda included:

2) Gabrijela Romić: Teacher life: Juggling stress, staying happy

3) Marija Rukavina: Happy Teachers, Happy Classrooms: AI for Stress-Free Teaching

Cassy Prskalo from Srednja škola Ilok delivered the workshop titled Beyond Boredom: Transforming Essay Practice into an Adventure. Cassy presented a variety of interactive activities designed to make essay writing, especially for the Matura Exam, interesting and enjoyable for the students. Participants tried out different methods to enhance students' writing skills, as well as critical thinking through fun and engaging exercises.

Gabrijela Romić from OŠ Vladimira Nazora in Vinkovci presented the talk titled Teacher life: Juggling stress, staying happyGabrijela discussed the common stressors in the teaching profession and their impact on mental health. The session emphasized the importance of self-care, maintaining professional boundaries, and adopting a positive mindset. Participants shared their experiences and strategies for managing stress and preventing burnout.

Marija Rukavina from OŠ Vladimira Nazora in Vinkovci held the talk titled Happy Teachers, Happy Classrooms: AI for Stress-Free Teaching. Marija's presentation highlighted AI-powered tools to reduce teachers' workloads, emphasizing the importance of utilizing technology for efficiency and taking breaks for well-being. She demonstrated how to use Gamma for presentations, Magic School for lesson planning, Twee for generating materials, FreeTTS for text-to-speech conversion, Gibbly for generating quizzes, as well as text-to-image converters for visual aids.

The participants were also updated on the latest news in HUPE including the details of the upcoming32nd Annual International HUPE Conference, which is taking place in Valamar Diamant Hotel, Poreč from 15 to 17 November 2024, such as call for speakers, registration fees, accommodation and transportation. The branch president also informed the participants about the 33rd HUPE Conference venue, Valamar in Poreč, voted by the members, the free month of Twinkl membership offered to HUPE members, as well as the future partner associations’ conferences. The second HUPE Osijek branch meeting in school year 2023-2024 was held on Saturday, 16 March 2024 at the Faculty of Education in Osijek. 24 HUPE members attended the meeting which lasted for four hours.

The agenda included:

The first workshop, titled Acting for dummies: Fairy tales development, was held by Katarina Berać Vuić from Gimnazija Županja. In an interactive hour-long workshop, Katarina presented numerous creative and simple drama activities in which our students can act out well-known stories and fairy tales in the classroom, and turn them into short plays of 3 to 5 minutes. The participants had a lot of fun trying out most of the presented drama activities culminating in the performances of different fairy tales as frozen images.

The second workshop, titled Implementing Magic of AI, was held by HUPE Zagreb branch president Mirjana Zubak Mičetić from OŠ Bogumila Tonija in Samobor. Mirjana introduced all the possibilities artificial intelligence tool Magic School can offer to teachers to help them lessen their workload, including its advantages and disadvantages. She showcased some of the practical activities and then the participants took part in a scavenger hunt where they had to explore the mentioned AI tool themselves.

The third talk titled The road that made all the difference 20 years ago: EFL teachers to young learners in Croatiawas held by Mirna Erk and Ksenija Benčina from the Faculty of Education in Osijek. Mirna and Ksenija presented the results of the survey they conducted with lower-primary EFL teachers to explore their job satisfaction, as well as the current situation in which many subject specialists increasingly teach lower-primary students. They also shared their respondents’ insightful perceptions, comments, and recommendations which started a productive discussion amongst the participants.

The participants were also informed about the news in HUPE including the winners of the 4th National Writing Competition – HUPE in Storyland, the plans to organize the teacher training course in Liverpool in July, HUPE’s new partner associations and their conferences, future professional development events such as HUPE Day planned for 20 April 2024 with international speakers, new edition of HUPEzine, and many more.

HUPE Osijek is extremely grateful to the speakers and all the members who attended the meeting, actively participated in the workshops and discussions, and created a great atmosphere for chatting and sharing ideas. Hopefully, we will see you at our next meeting in May.

The first HUPE Osijek branch meeting in school year 2023-2024

The first HUPE Osijek branch meeting in school year 2023-2024 was held on 25 November 2023 at the Faculty of Education in Osijek. 24 English enthusiasts and HUPE members decided to spend their Saturday morning attending a 3-hour mini conference rerun with their hardworking colleagues repeating their successful workshops from the 31st HUPE conference.

At the beginning of the meeting the HUPE Osijek branch president informed the participants about the 31st Annual International HUPE Conference, which took place in Valamar, Poreč from 20 to 22 October 2023. She reported on the conference venue, partners and sponsors, programme, plenary speakers, workshops, social events, raffle, as well as on the overall positive feedback the HUPE Organizing Committee has received.

The first workshop, titled Are you a copycat or a busy bee?, was held by Mirta Kos Kolobarić from the Secondary School of Economics from Slavonski Brod. In an hour-long workshop, Mirta presented an engaging way of introducing ‘animal’ idioms to describe people's personalities through learning stations and various tasks and activities. She also shared ready-to-use materials for the learning stations on the topic of body idioms.

After the coffee break and catching up with colleagues, the second workshop, titled Supporting Gifted Learners: Strategies, Tips & Ideas, was held by Ana Katruša from Primary School kralja Tomislav in Našice. Ana talked about different types of gifted students and how to meet their unique needs, especially in the early years. She also presented, and the participants took part in, differentiated activities and games, as well as critical thinking strategies teaches can use with their gifted students.

The third talk titled It makes you look old! was held by Ksenija Benčina from the Faculty of Education in Osijek. Ksenija gave insight into the grammatical an lexical changes in the English language occurring in the last few decades highlighting the need to keep pace with these changes in order to effectively teach English.

After the workshops, participants were informed about the news in HUPE including the highlights from the AGM, as well as the upcoming events such as the 4th national short story writing competition HUPE in Storyland taking place from 1 December 2023 to 15 January 2024, HUPE Day planned for 20 April 2024 with international speakers, and workshops and talks for all levels, as well as the 32nd Annual International HUPE Conference that is taking place in Valamar Poreč from 15 to 17 November 2024. After HUPE’s very successful teacher training courses in London and Edinburgh, the participant were informed about the plans to organize the courses in Dublin or Malta in August 2024. At the end of the meeting, the branch president organized a short Kahoot quiz to test the members’ knowledge about the 31st HUPE Conference in order to give away four conference goody bags filled with useful teaching resources and materials.
